    The Gumbo Gophers 4-H club met on December 7th at the Alzada Community Hall. President Natile Foxley called the meeting to order. Breanna Ulmer led the pledges. Treasurer Keenan McInerney gave the treasurer's report. Song leader Alivia Foxley led us in singing Silent Night. After the business meeting, the Gophers played a Christmas bag exchange game.     Because of a love for the residents at Dahl Memorial, staff members have created an Angel Tree this year to make their holiday a little brighter. Each resident has listed a few items they need/want on paper angels. These angels are hanging on a Christmas tree just inside the door at Dahl Memorial Healthcare.     Sagebrush Service Club is once again sponsoring a Christmas lights contest. Judges will be out and about on December 16 this year and would like people to have their lights on by 5:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places in this year’s contest.     Last week, the Eagle reported that Mid-Rivers Communications recently announced that the cooperative awarded fourteen educational technology grants to educational facilities and non-profit entities around the Mid-Rivers service area. Ekalaka Public Schools first, fourth and fifth grade students will benefit from $4,000 in grant money.     Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members held the drawing for their annual gun raffle fundraiser this week. Stephanie Carroll of Ekalaka was the lucky grand prize winner this year. Carroll won a Howa 7mm-08 rifle. Local Karen Hammel won Leupold binoculars as the second place prize. The third place prize this year, a wildlife print, was won by Lester Phillippi of Hammond.     On Sunday November 17, nominated members of the CCHS music department made their way to Ashland for 2019 District Honor Band and Choir.     The Carter County Community Foundation (CCCF) recently announced this year's grant recipients. The ambulance fund at Dahl Memorial Healthcare received $3,800 to help purchase a basket stretcher for rough country rescues. The grant will also partially fund a power load for aiding EMTs getting patients into and out of the ambulances. Carter County Geological Society received $2,900 for summer youth programming.   • 97-year-old Klauzer a member of 79th Kansas Honor Flight

    Frank Klauzer, a 97-year-old Montana native now living in Kansas, just returned from a three day trip to Washington DC as a member of the 79th Kansas Honor Flight. Klauzer is a retired Air Force Major and was the only WWII veteran on the trip, also having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Jim Klauzer, Frank's son, attended with him.     A Veterans Day program was held at Carter County High School recognizing local veterans on Monday. A light social hour kicked off the day's activities at around 2 p.m. Carter County FCCLA provided snacks for veterans and their families.   • Drive meets quota

    Last Tuesday’s blood drive in Ekalaka yielded twenty-six units of blood. Twenty-three people attended the drive and 21 were able to donate. Of those, 8 had appointments and 15 were walk-ins. Five people donated double units as the quota for the drive was met. David Malenovsky won the drive’s door prize. The next Ekalaka community blood drive will take place on Wednesday, January 8 from 1:15 to 5:30 p.m. at Carter County Events Center.   • Ekalaka nearing precipitation record

    As of Wednesday morning, Ekalaka had officially received 24.49 inches of precipitation, according to National Weather Service data. That number is 8.66 inches above normal. In 1971 Ekalaka received 26.95 inches for the entire year, the most on record and about 2.5 inches more than the area has received so far this year. Only twice has Ekalaka ever received over 25 inches of precipitation for the year. The other year was 2011 when 25.90 inches were recorded. That year holds a record for May precipitation with 11.99 inches....

    Unofficial results of the General Municipal Election for the Town of Ekalaka show that Raquel S. Williams, David Loudermilk and Jimmy W. Mackay have been elected to the Town Council. Williams, who ran unopposed for a four-year term, received 134 votes. Loudermilk and Mackay were each elected to two-year terms, defeating Micheal John Archer and Patrick W. Strickland .     The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Dahl Memorial Healthcare facility was held on September 6. Since then, Ekalaka has received 5.34 inches of moisture, and several inches of snow. The majority of that snow came on October 10, when 5 inches fell. So far this October, twenty days have seen temperatures below freezing.
