Around forty local fathers and daughters attended a daddy-daughter dance last Saturday at Carter County Events Center. The dance was put on by the Puptown Pioneers Homemaker Club, a volunteer organization that works to improve the quality of life for families and communities through leadership development, volunteer service and education. The Gumbo Gophers 4-H club met on December 7th at the Alzada Community Hall. President Natile Foxley called the meeting to order. Breanna Ulmer led the pledges. On Monday, Heather VanGelder from ONEOK presented an $80,000 check to Dahl Memorial Healthcare Association. The funds from the grant will be used to purchase twenty-five new Stryker hospital beds for the new facility that is currently under construction. A truck carrying forty-two thousand pounds of beer was on its way to Sidney when it wrecked just a few miles north of Ekalaka last Thursday. Plains Towing and Recovery out of Belle Fourche was on scene with a semi, skid-steer, two wreckers, a flatbed trailer and a recovery trailer to cleanup the wreckage. Last week, the Eagle reported that Mid-Rivers Communications recently announced that the cooperative awarded fourteen educational technology grants to educational facilities and non-profit entities around the Mid-Rivers service area. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members held the drawing for their annual gun raffle fundraiser this week. Stephanie Carroll of Ekalaka was the lucky grand prize winner this year. On Sunday November 17, nominated members of the CCHS music department made their way to Ashland for 2019 District Honor Band and Choir. This year was the first time St. Labre has hosted the event. The Carter County Community Foundation (CCCF) recently announced this year's grant recipients. The ambulance fund at Dahl Memorial Healthcare received $3,800 to help purchase a basket stretcher for rough country rescues. Frank Klauzer, a 97-year-old Montana native now living in Kansas, just returned from a three day trip to Washington DC as a member of the 79th Kansas Honor Flight. Klauzer is a retired Air Force Major and was the only WWII veteran on the trip, also having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Jim Klauzer, Frank's son, attended with him.
