  • Memories

    Loyd Townsend|Updated Jul 6, 2017

I will have at least one more article on Bob and Grace Renshaw. I last wrote about how Bob had left the homestead, been elected Clerk and Recorder, rented the Lane property, and eventually moved to their permanent home in Ekalaka in 1931. Like most of us, he reports that they paid “monthly installments.” I remember, especially as a grade schooler, what a beautiful yard and home they had. There was always lots of work for the new clerk and recorder and he named the following people who helped him in his office: Eddie Syk...

  • Memories

    Loyd Townsend|Updated Jun 22, 2017

In this article I will share some Renshaw family history along with weather, crops, individuals, schools, and business information. Renshaw reports that their son, Morris, somehow had a broken hip. Guess who was there to take care of it? That’s right, Dr. B. B. Sandy who lived only about four miles northeast. It was a bad break and Dr. Sandy said there was a one in one hundred chance that Morris wouldn’t be a cripple. The first bone setting did not work and Dr. Sandy was called back to reset the hip. He made a splint, a san...

  • Mid-Rivers begins fiber optic installs in Ekalaka

Mid-Rivers Communications started preparing to put fiber optic cable in Ekalaka this week. Residents may have noticed crews working in the area. Plans call to have all the lines done in town this summer. Reportedly, the crews in Ekalaka will be able to run fiber optic cable to between about three and seven homes or businesses per day once the main lines have been laid. That number, of course, depends on how many obstacles are in their way. Surface areas will not be affected by the installation of new line and current...

  • Lament of the log house

    Updated Jun 22, 2017

One of the first residences in Ekalaka was torn down recently. The old log house was once home to Jack Charters, and later to Amos and Romaine Lambert. At one time, the house stood on Main Street but was moved-log by log-to Munro Avenue sometime around the turn of the century. The following was written by Sharon Barrere, a descendant of Amos and Romaine Lambert. I stand vacant, damaged, and worn by the ravages of time, looking through dirty windows. The years have taken their...

  • May's new pool update and thank you

    Updated May 18, 2017

The question of why motel pools do not have to have lifeguards and the town pool does is often asked. The answer is found in the Montana Code Annotated (50-53-107) and also in the Administrative Rules of Montana (37.115.1601). In those sections, code specifically singles out public/municipally owned swimming pools and bathing places and requires them to have lifeguards so as to ensure the operation of the facility to be sanitary, healthful, and safe. However, it also indicates that privately owned swimming facilities may not...

  • Bright Ideas

    Lois Lambert|Updated May 10, 2017

I’ve been watching lots of advertisements for cars. Maybe those are more generously assigned to baseball games that I watch most evenings. Brands start with 2017 models of Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Volkswagen, Subaru, Audi, Lincoln, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Ford, and Chevy. Henry Ford would be astounded at the changes made. Ford and Chevy trucks don’t advertise much in urban areas where professional baseball contests are held. These cars have reduced fuel consumption, but it doesn’t take a lot of fuel t...
