Delores (Peggy) Volin, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2019. Peggy was delivered by her grandmother at home, on June 15,1931, at Ridgway, MT. She grew up living in the country in Carter County, MT. She used to talk about riding to school bareback on her horse. She moved to town in Ekalaka, MT., to attend high school. She worked for room and board doing domestic chores. She played the drums in her Dad's dance band and kept the beat all her life. At this...
A March thaw following the third coldest February on record in the area has resulted in excessive runoff again this year. Rivers and creeks were pushed beyond their banks starting last week and continuing this week. Though not as severe as 2011 for many, creeks washed over county roads in multiple locations. Highway 323 closed mid-morning on Monday due to water running over the road. As of Wednesday morning, the water had receded, but the road remained closed. The Little...
I am going to end my Welch articles with more information on Eldon (Cub) Welch. In Shifting Scenes he reports on his family and some of his military service during World War II. While still living in Ekalaka, Cub married Marilyn, the oldest daughter of R.J. Price. At the time, Price owned the Super Valu Store. If my memory is correct (and many times it is not) I believe Marilyn was married to Jack Hough who was also a part of the Super Valu Store group. R.J. Price and his family came from Wyoming to Ekalaka. Now I am going...
Basketball isn't the only game in town in southeast Montana. Local students were also pitting their academic skills against each other at Academic Olympics, which was held March 5 and 6 at Miles Community College. Tuesday, March 5, was junior high competition. Nineteen teams competed in written and oral competition. Representing Ekalaka were Jaden Pardee, Heidi LaBree, Codi Melton, Kendall Kittelmann, and Jennie Schmid. They won one round and lost two in oral competition. On...
In this article, I will continue writing about the Chuck and Maude Welch family with a thought by their daughter Lucile: “I don’t believe my parents ever regretted coming to Montana although I am sure they did endure many hardships. I guess the good times off-set the bad!” Maude passed away in 1961 and Chuck in 1970. After reading many articles in Shifting Scenes of the Homestead Days I have to agree. What made these “good times?” It had to be then, and today, because of caring, wonderful neighbors and people who were read...
In this article, I will continue on with stories about Charles (Chuck) and Maude Welch. Lucille wrote that her father and mother had many hard times but also many good times and wonderful neighbors; many who gave up their homesteads and returned to their former houses. She lists at least ten families with the statement “just to name a few.” The names listed were not known to me. Maude writes of their “Literary Societies,” social neighbor singing groups and baseball teams. She mentioned that Chuck was quite a catcher. Those b...
One year as mayor, boy did it go fast! Some of the things we accomplished this year were: • Replaced some outdated sewer pipe under the bridge; • Put a new furnace in the Town Shop so that it can be heated more efficiently; • Reduced water loss; • Had our first audit with new auditors; • Initiated steps to resolve the disagreement regarding the Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department; • Repaired Mormon Avenue; • Implemented the city limit bow hunting; • Developed a facility use ag...
This article is about another neighbor, Bonnie Peabody, who also lived across the street and up the hill from us. I would like to share some information about Bonnie, but first I need to go back a generation on the Peabody family. Charles and Mary Peabody Charles was born in Vermont and moved to Iowa where he met his future wife, Mary Hite. They were married on July 4, 1879. In the summer of 1884 they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota coming overland in a covered wagon, drawn by four horses, trailing their cows and milking...
Area residents might recognize Ekalaka Elementary third grader Cordelia Cofer because there is a good chance she has sold them delicious Girl Scout cookies, probably more than once. Cordelia is a Juliette Girl Scout. Juliette scouts are registered girl members in grades K-12 who are not affiliated with a troop and complete Girl Scout activities with the guidance of an adult mentor. Since there is not a Girl Scout troop in the area, this fits her needs and interests very well....

She was the sixth child of fourteen, of George and Frances Gundlach. Virginia is survived by her three children, LeRoy "Shorty" (Gloria) Adrian, Greg Adrian, and Vicki (Travis) Petrik also...
Yes, I know I haven’t had a “Memories” article since Nov. 2, but let me explain. On Oct. 27 we received a telephone call that our daughter Arlene and her husband were cleaning the eve troughs on their house. The ladder tipped and she fell 12-14 feet onto the basement cement entry. She was taken to the Twin Falls emergency room where they found a head injury with some bleeding that required seven stitches. She was airlifted to Boise, Idaho for more treatment. The head bleeding stopped, but she had two broken vertebrates in her...
The general hunting season has ended, but management season archery hunts for antlerless mule deer continue in both Glendive and Ekalaka through Feb. 15, 2019. No bucks may be harvested after the close of the general season (Nov. 25, 2018). The purpose of these hunts is to reduce conflicts with mule deer by reducing deer numbers in and adjacent to urban areas. Glendive has utilized this tool for several seasons, but this is the first year for Ekalaka’s management hunt. Below is some general information about these hunts: B...

To the citizens of Ekalaka, As members of the Town Council, we would like to keep the public informed of the status regarding Mormon Avenue. We realize that the condition of Mormon continues to be a concern. We have explored several options in how to repair the road so that it remains cost effective, but no final solutions have been reached. This is due to, but not limited to, money, our remote location, lack of accessible resources, man power and road equipment. At the November 7 meeting, a motion was made to have the...
This story was written by Heidi Morton, the daughter of Wayne and Deb Yost and a 2000 graduate of Carter County High School. The article was originally published in WiNNING Perspectives, Vol. 10 Issue 1, a magazine created by the National Organization of Professional Women in Natural Resources Conservation Service. I grew up in one of those little "fly over towns." My dad was a District Conservationist in Ekalaka, Montana, which is part of the Carter County Conservation...
Take pride in your community and help clean it up on September 29. Gather trash, tame the brush and make paths more walkable. Bring a team! Additionally, furniture and mattresses can be taken to the transfer site for free, as can the first load of construction materials per resident. June 18, 1934 – August 11, 2018 Born in eastern Montana into a cattle ranching family, Bernie was a happy, cheerful child who grew to become a cattle rancher in his own right. Fiercely independent, Bernie chose to live on his own from the age of 15 so he could attend high school in Miles City rather than in the country. He had a lot of friends and was a good student. Bernie supported himself working weekends for several local ranchers, namely the Camerons, and cleaning out t...

It has been almost six months since I assumed office as your mayor. I started the year by taking a city government course online through MSU in Bozeman and, recently, went to a budgeting workshop in Miles City. Both were very interesting and informative. The council has had successful meetings, also learning about how city government, budgets, etc. work. The more we learn, the better we will be able to serve our community. I must thank Elston, Clayton and Kitty for keeping...
We always had a carnival come to town, usually in the middle of the summer, during the early days in Ekalaka. Everyone looked forward to it and enjoyed themselves thoroughly when it came. Of course there were the carnival rides, I don't believe that we had tilt-a-whirls and things like that in Ekalaka, but we had the Ferris wheel and of course the merry-go-round. My experience with the merry-go-round came very early, at probably age 3. I wanted to go on and Mother put me on, only to have to rescue me when I cried. Later, I...
Those are the first words of a song from the movie “Cabaret,” starring Liza Minnelli. The song goes on to say, “Money makes the world go around.” I must have believed that. Never having any excess money, I bought two Powerball lottery tickets every week. I had selected numbers for tickets, based on Ekalaka’s zip code. I wanted to pave Ekalaka’s streets. I had not thought that problem through. I would need much more than the paving cost to cover maintenance and repair. And costs would go on and on. What is the town’s tota...
