As I sit here, memories come to mind. As a child, I have come to Ekalaka to visit many times. Each visit builds on a journey of the past to the present, for which I am grateful to know my father's path. As an adult, my Kalstrom cousins, the Waterlands, and many others have welcomed my family and I. We reminisce of days gone by. A small place we have come to stay, in this quaint town of Ekalaka. A building our family calls the "Little House" on Kalstrom Way. Many town's people...

Those of you who follow Facebook probably know that I made a trip to Ekalaka last week. Actually it wasn’t so much a trip to Ekalaka as a trip to Camp Needmore for a family reunion. I did get to Ekalaka and will tell you of my impressions. First the trip; I flew from Sacramento to Denver and then rode to Ekalaka with my sister Marti and her husband Roy Cornwell. I asked for wheelchair service for the trip since I have trouble walking. That was a real lifesaver, instead of being worn out, I was quite able to function n...
In the Fall of 2020, The Ekalaka Bible Church was approved to become a sponsoring organization for Carter County High School's “School-to-Work Program.” For many years now the Carter County High School has offered a School-to-Work program for eligible juniors and seniors. The participating students are released from school to work at one of several of the participating businesses around town. This provides students with an opportunity to gain job experience by doing supervised work as well as an opportunity to receive on-...
In September of 2020 it was only a dream. This year, local Ellen Beach realized that dream. Beach has always had an interest in home beautification. As a 10-year-old, she and her father drew pictures and plotted a yard around a newly built house in the Mill Iron community. She took the project in 4-H for several years as a youngster, further cultivating her interest. Then life happened, Beach says, and she was too busy over the next several years raising a family and helping o...
On April 23, 2021, I wrote a letter to the editor regarding the Town Benches. Since then I received phone calls from two ladies who are willing to help me paint benches. I also received a phone call from a lady who wishes to pay for the cost of the supplies going forward. She fondly remembers sitting on Main St. benches with her grandparents. She no longer lives in Carter Co., but wants to help with efforts in keeping benches on Main St of Ekalaka. I also received numerous words of thanks for the work done the past ten years...

Happy Spring to all! It has been some beautiful weather, but would be nice to see some more moisture. Just thought it was time to share some notes from the Mayor and a few reminders. It is spring and moving into summer. Please show your pride in the community and keep your lawns mowed and trimmed. Keep sidewalks clean. If you have an elderly neighbor, or a vacant property next to you, think about paying it forward and pitch in. Ekalaka has good people, so I have no doubt you...

My father’s family is traced back to West Virginia, which was still Virginia when my great-great and great-grandfather lived there before moving west. There are Curry/Currey family reunions in West Virginia to this day. I was told by a cousin there that all people with our name in WV are related. ‘Currey’ and ‘Curry’ were used interchangeably, there at that time. I researched this part of the family the last few years using Ancestry.com and other sources. It is postulated that the family may have come from Northeast...

I almost wrote this letter last year, but thought I would be patient. Today is not a patient-type of day, I guess. Everybody should know that Luther & I have taken care of the Main St. benches for about 10 years now. We have paid for most of the supplies, paint, varathane & wood. The Town of Ekalaka has also donated money if I present them with a bill for supplies. We have provided nearly all of the labor. In 2015, four ladies from Ekalaka came to help me paint them because I could not get to it. At this time of year I am...

This is the end of my project. I rounded off the twenty eight students up two more. There were others I went to school with in those eight years in Ekalaka. A boy with the last name Black who was the doctor’s son for example. But my memory of Mitzi and Blaine are still strong so I’ve included them, with all us others. Thank you Eric Lovec for allowing me to express myself to a town, and kids from long ago, who I still have a large place in my heart for. The Finale — Herding Cats — Two Added to Twenty Eight I’ve come to t...
