Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members held the drawing for their annual gun raffle fundraiser this week. Stephanie Carroll of Ekalaka was the lucky grand prize winner this year. Carroll won a Howa 7mm-08 rifle. Local Karen Hammel won Leupold binoculars as the second place prize. The third place prize this year, a wildlife print, was won by Lester Phillippi of Hammond. Samples from three deer harvested in southeast Montana have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. These are the first positive results in the southeastern corner of the state. A second test will be conducted to confirm the initial positive results. The Carter County Community Foundation (CCCF) recently announced this year's grant recipients. The ambulance fund at Dahl Memorial Healthcare received $3,800 to help purchase a basket stretcher for rough country rescues. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department, along with the aid of some community volunteers, cleaned Main Street last Thursday prior to the county fair. Each volunteer spent anywhere between three and fourteen hours sweeping and shoveling gravel, sand and dirt off the street. Weeds were also removed from cracks in the pavement and concrete. A fire at Mainstreet Market caused significant damage to the Ekalaka building Monday. At around 5:50 a.m., Sheriff Neil Kittelmann was called because the back door of the business was open and there was graffiti painted on the exterior. Last weekend Alzada Fire Department, Carter County Rural Fire, and Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department handled three fires in Carter County. Late Monday night and early Tuesday morning a thunderstorm producing a great deal of lightning and little rain started several more fires. The largest of these fires, the Coffee Pot Fire, is estimated to have burned nearly 2,000 acres near the Powder River breaks. On Thursday, August 11, people who are in town for the 2017 Days of ‘85 Fair and Rodeo can kick off their busy weekend with ladies’ night karaoke at Dawg House Pub, beginning at 9:00 p.m. The pub is also sponsoring mud volleyball at the fairgrounds on Friday morning, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Then, at 3:00 p.m., pig wrestling will take place at the fairgrounds in the same mud hole used for volleyball.
