The Annual Days of ‘85 Firemen’s Barbecue will be taking place at a different location this year. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw and beans at the future home of EVFD which is located at the corner of E. This year, Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members collectively made the decision to put on a fireworks display on Independence Day for residents and visitors of the Town of Ekalaka to enjoy. Local veteran Rich Burch lost his home located on Senator St. in Ekalaka to fire on February 21st. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. Burch was not home at the time of the fire. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department was on scene. The home is still standing, but due to extensive damage it is not yet known whether or not the structure can/will be saved. The Mark Wright benefit was a huge success. As of Tuesday, over $17,000 has been donated. Loyd and Phyllis Townsend reached their 74th wedding anniversary on August 30th! They were married in Miles City on August 30th, 1948. Loyd, age 92, was born in Camp Crook, South Dakota and “Phyl,” 91, was born in Ekalaka. Both graduated from Carter COunty High School, Loyd in 1948 and Phyl in 1949. They have two children. Two representatives from the Town of Ekalaka and two from the Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department signed a temporary contract for fire protection services earlier this summer. On April 29th, Ekalaka Elementary students celebrated Arbor Day with an afternoon full of presentations and programs. The day's events were put together by fourth grade teacher Johanna Tooke. A fire that started on Monday approximately sixteen miles south of Ekalaka on Highway 323 burned 3,177 acres. The fire was aided by high winds and jumped the highway, making it to Box Elder Creek. Four different producers had land burned. The fire was about six miles long and one mile wide.
