Ekalaka Public Schools will be holding a kindergarten screening on April 8 separate from the developmental screening that is taking place on Tuesday, April 6. The screening for children who will be entering kindergarten next year will be on Thursday, April 8, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. in the gym. Last Thursday the unified school board for Ekalaka Public Schools approved distance learning during the entire week of Thanksgiving. In total, the school is closed for two and a half days this week; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. School was already scheduled to be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from Wednesday afternoon through the rest of the week. Earlier this year, local teen Katie Tooke was battling health problems. She spent almost an entire month seriously ill before finally being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. After reporting one case of COVID-19 in Carter County early last week, the Carter County COVID-19 Task Force reported a total of three active cases last Wednesday. Mr. Daniel Conley is no stranger to small towns, or Montana, even though the new Carter County High School English teacher was born in New York City. As the days continue to get shorter and cooler, Carter County Chamber of Commerce members have reflected on a wonderful summer and are currently looking forward to the months ahead. A phone call out of the blue led Stephen Ely and his wife, Melissa, to Ekalaka for a visit earlier this summer. "We fell in love," the new principal at Ekalaka Public Schools told the Eagle. No official plan has yet been finalized for getting Ekalaka Public Schools students back in the classroom amid COVID-19. A reopening schools committee met earlier this week to discuss options. Physical health assessments for all boys planning to play sports at Ekalaka Public Schools during the upcoming school year will take place from July 21 through July 24. Appointments must be made for all physicals between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on those days. Students will be met at the front door to be COVID-19 screened and will be required to wear a mask. Countywide voter turnout for the primary election was much higher than it was in 2018 as seventy-three percent of the county’s 885 registered voters returned mail ballots by 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Precinct 13 (Ekalaka) and Precinct 14 (Rural Ekalaka) each had 73 percent voter turnout while Precinct 1 (Alzada) and Precinct 3 (Hammond) had 71 percent. In total, 650 ballots were returned. Concerns early last week about the potential of rain during the CCHS Class of 2020 outdoor graduation ceremony were forgotten by Saturday afternoon. The Carter County FFA chapter will not be hosting an annual end-of-year banquet. Chapter officers have instead decided to proceed with the hired hand auction. Members of the organization will not be auctioned off like normal. Instead, CCHS FFA is doing an online sale. Students will be available to work for one, 8 hour day.
