  • Election 2018 – Initiative 185

Alina Sturgess, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Updated Oct 19, 2018

Montana smokers could be on the hook for an additional $2 per pack if ballot initiative Initiative 185 passes. The tobacco industry is shelling out big bucks in hopes it won't happen. It's a big reason your mailbox is stuffed this election season with flyers arguing its pros and cons. The initiative's backers see its passage as a "win-win." Higher taxes for tobacco products could discourage their use and perhaps reduce medical problems they cause. The extra money raised would...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jesse and Connie Barnhart|Updated Oct 19, 2018

A vote for the continued support for 6-Mill Levy (LR-128, SB-85) would again help keep our most precious natural resources, our children, from looking for lower educational costs out of state. Some would like you to believe that 6-Mill is a new tax and unnecessary. It is neither. It is a 70 year Montana tradition approved by voters every 10 years without increase. There is strong bipartisan support including both current US Senators and organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Farm Bureau. Consider these facts....

My hometown had some 8,000 residents, situated midway between Kansas City and St. Louis, on the Missouri River. James A. Michener mentioned the town without using its name in the book “Centennial.” By Missouri standards, we were a small town. A reformatory for boys, ages 10-18, was located on the edge of town, complete with a dairy. Every 4th of July they put on a free fireworks display. When we lived in town, my dad would drive the car to the prescribed parking lot and we’d settle in for the evening. Mom always made lots...

  • Spring cleaning, summer buying

    Ryan OConnell|Updated Jun 7, 2018

When Hank Leffingwell woke up Saturday morning, he didn't think he would be up against a swarm. "They hit us like a bunch of piranhas," he said. The Community Wide Garage Sale was a quick success for the Leffingwells, who say they were able to sell their big ticket items right away. Most sellers were pleased with the turnout and a couple of the more rural sellers were surprised at the amount of people they'd had. A couple sellers were disappointed in the foot traffic,...

  • Bright Ideas

    Lois Lambert|Updated Nov 2, 2017

I tend to think of myself as I was at 27 or 30, full-voiced, opinionated, the sort of person you either liked or didn’t. I never was big, but I tried to stand tall. I was a Democrat, but there were a few other Democrats in this mostly Republican county. Certain established Republican women had a hard time enduring me, but I brought a local boy home after a 17 year absence. My husband didn’t choose to attend Chamber of Commerce meetings; he took care of kids. I became a member of the organization. When a former president of...

When I was thinking about retiring, the Prairie Singer told me not to do that. Her ideas and mine were rarely the same, but she said it was all right to “shake things up” (her words, not mine) every once in a while. Thinking of you, Celia. There have been numerous statements of agreement for retaliating against athletes who choose to kneel during the National Anthem. Is it disrespect for the flag? Is it disrespect for our beliefs? Or is it recognizing the ease of taking black lives without punishment? Are we black? Do we kno...
