There are, to date, six main reasons why Troy and Mikel Fruit have decided to sell the business they have built together for nearly forty years. In October, 1984 Fruits first started their business in Ekalaka with the purchase of the T & R Standard Station on Main Street. Troy was 20 years old; Mikel was 21. They purchased the business from Tom Carroll and Randy Smith. The couple ran the business by themselves until 1992 when they hired their first employee, Lance Barrere....

The incident occurred on February 25th when Eben managed to knock a...

I have a love affair with Ekalaka and Carter County. Compared with my entire life I didn’t spend much time there but it is embedded way down deep in my soul. Every time that I go there it is brought back to the forefront of my mind again. What is it about the area that affects me that way? I think that first of all, it is the area itself. We lived in several places near Ekalaka and I really liked all of them. I think that my favorite was what we called the Opechee Park place. Jesse LaBree referred to it once as the Kinsey p...

1-20-2023 I failed to mention last week, we enjoyed a visit to our appropriations subcommittee, from conservation districts across the State. Steve Wanderaas, McCone County and Dean Rogge, Garfield County were among those sharing about all the work districts do to enhance our many natural resources, primarily air, water and land. Doug Bonsell from Carter County was good to stop by the House Floor and say hi, while he was taking care of some legislative business earlier in the...

In my last article, I wrote about the Rowleys teaching and now I am going to step back a little with more interesting information. In 1956, both grade school and high school boards voted to place one person as administrator and Mr. Rowley was employed. He states he remained in that capacity until 1966. The following excerpt comes from "Shifting Scenes, Vol. II." "In November 1966, Ruby and I moved to the Turbiville Brothers Ranch to live in the house that had been vacated by...

Slug was born in Broadus, Montana in 1943, to Jack C. and Margaret (Williams) Mills. He was a large baby and the doctor commented "he's a helluva slug". The nickname stuck. From an early age he worked on his family's ranch. Work was important to Slug. One of his first jobs, away from the ranch, was herding sheep for Lawrence Capra. He earned a hefty 50 cents a day. He also worked for other area ranchers such as Darrold Mraz, Manly Moore, his Uncle George Williams, and Warren S...

My last article about "Mister Rowley" started at his birth, followed by his education and teaching positions. In 1925 he learned of an opening of the principalship of the schools in Ekalaka, Montana - he applied and was accepted. From "Shifting Scenes Vol. II:" "The Ekalaka Grade School was located just south of the Carter County High School which in 1925 was in the building now occupied by the Farmers' Union. The grade school was a two story frame building with two...

Charlie was the third of four children born on the ranch with Angie (1922), Francis (1924), Charlie (1926) and Lela (1928) completing the family...
It’s been a long time since I have written an article for the Eagle, but a short time ago I was going through the “Shifting Scenes” books and came upon a very interesting family. It starts in Volume II on page 746. The names were William and Ruby Rowley. There are three or four pages about them. One of my first thoughts was that every student used the name “Mister Rowley” — he may have been called Bill at Lions Club meetings but never by any student. In my opinion, he was the greatest teacher Carter County High School has...
