Dear Editor, I wanted to take a minute and explain why I have decided to run for another term on the Ekalaka Public Schools School Board. Let me start by saying how thankful I am for the support and votes for the last nine years while I have been serving on the school board. To say it has been a learning and educational experience is a true understatement. The three terms I have served have brought about many changes and challenges: • Building the new elementary school building • Learning school finances and how monies are al...

I wrote some of the following from a building at the University of Montana where I go to write sometimes. The sight of the studious young people are an inspiration. And I did attend one quarter here in 1974, although I graduated from MSU, so I am a cross between a bobcat and a grizzly. The following are five more students I went to school with in the old high school at Ekalaka. The Leaves — Not Of Grass, But Of Our Vine I sit on the campus of U of M, Students about me boosts a man of age, To do justice to all leaves on the s...

Part II or Barnett’s Blue Bike Broke Badly Five more from seventy four, my thoughts, I’m trying to retrieve from my account, Some old coins covered thick in dust and fraught, My memory rabbit hole caved, no doubt. But enough cream rises it seems, for plots, Or words to form in either, springs the fount, John on monkey bars now unsafe for tots, I raced Jack in a sprint, Coach stopwatch count. Chip dribbles to the right and then set shot, Barnett’s blue bike breaks, though fairly stout, Saxophone reed in mouth and music dots,...
The following is my first of five poems of twenty-eight I’ll write for all members of my Carter County High School class of 1974. I’m writing in alphabetical order. One must write when the faculties still exist. The poems are entirely from my memory, and I take all credit or criticism for which I might incur. I would include the “Class Prophecy” which I found online, but talk about snarky. Hence, I will not include it. ‘Pseudo-Sonnets’ For My Class of 1974 I will write, of class of seventy four, Alphabetical, twenty eigh...
The Carter County High School Lady Bulldogs won the District 4C Tournament for the second time in the last four years in Miles City on Saturday night. Even more impressive though, is that the girls have won the Southern C Divisional Tournament for the last three years. This weekend, they will look to...
Dale Dean was only four years old when his uncle, Rankin Dean, bought a new 1955 International Harvester R-110. The popular two-door pickups of the time were powered by a 100 horsepower inline-6 engine, mated to a 3-speed manual transmission and, according to many owners, were "tough as nails." Now, Dale Dean's son, Adam, is planning a 2,500-mile round trip from Lewistown, Montana to Chicago, Illinois with the pickup. Adam is making the trip to pay homage to his late father...

Editor’s note: The following poem was written and submitted by Erwin Curry, former Carter County resident. It was everything to me: A delight of discovery, A sign of seasons turning, A source of entertainment, A refuge from sadness, A solitude for thought. Boxelder Creek, my dependable Boxelder. Cottontails, beaver, rattlesnakes, Mink tracks, deer tracks - raccoons. Tall cottonwoods, fluff afloat, Magpies in the morning. Licorice smell from the wild. Boxelder, my dependable Boxelder. Life can be chaotic. My first eighteen y...

Now I would like to give you readers more history and information on this family and as stated, seven children were born-- six boys and one girl. Ruth the daughter, wrote the Shifting Scenes article and has an article in the April 8, 1960 Ekalaka Eagle. I am going to use information from both. "Arthur, oldest son, was born in Deadwood and came to Montana as a...
Their daughter Ruth has some memories and descriptions of her mother I would like to share. “Mrs. Quam spoke of the times on the ranch when they didn’t know where their next sack of flour was coming from, but they managed to get by. She often told how she would mend clothes and then re-mend them, as there was no money for new things at the time.” Ruth also comments that Mrs. Quam was essentially a home loving person, a fine character with strong devotion to her family. Another memory of the area: Mr. Quam and some of his n...

The Bulldogs went fifty-two yards on 9 plays in the game’s opening drive for their first score. The score came on a short quarterback keeper up the middle by Turner Tooke. The ensuing conversion try failed. After a defensive stand, the Bulldogs had a holding call on their second possession that pinned them deep in their own territory, forcing them to punt the ball for the first time this s...
