Part II or Barnett’s Blue Bike Broke Badly Five more from seventy four, my thoughts, I’m trying to retrieve from my account, Some old coins covered thick in dust and fraught, My memory rabbit hole caved, no doubt. Chip dribbles to the right and then set shot, Barnett’s blue bike breaks, though fairly stout, Saxophone reed in mouth and music dots,...

The following is my first of five poems of twenty-eight I’ll write for all members of my Carter County High School class of 1974. I’m writing in alphabetical order. One must write when the faculties still exist. The poems are entirely from my memory, and I take all credit or criticism for which I might incur. I would include the “Class Prophecy” which I found online, but talk about snarky. Hence, I will not include it. ‘Pseudo-Sonnets’ For My Class of 1974 I will write, of class of seventy four, Alphabetical, twenty eigh...

Frank Klauzer, 98, passed away on February 16, 2021 in Andover, Kansas. His goal has always been to live to 100, and he got close, but unfortunately not all the way. We were looking forward to that celebration, and while not 100, he lived 98 full years – and that is worth celebrating in itself. Frank was the third son of Frank, Sr. and Anna Klauzer. He was born in Mill Iron, Montana and lived there until he was 20 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942. He served as a...

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Feb 11, 2021

Dear Editor, As a lifelong resident and tax payer in Carter County I found the information from the staff of Dahl Memorial and the County Commissioners very informative. I have always found the staff at the hospital very competent and am very thankful for their help many times. Unfortunately there is so much information that is never known. Last years virus has hit everyone, disrupted lives and made it extremely difficult for the health care workers. It was good to know how they have dealt with it all. The commissioners were...

Now, Dale Dean's son, Adam, is planning a 2,500-mile round trip from Lewistown, Montana to Chicago, Illinois with the pickup. Adam is making the trip to pay homage to his late father...

  • Families in agriculture are adaptive, we all need them to continue

    Erwin Curry|Updated Feb 4, 2021

I originally wrote this for my hometown newspaper, in which I try to avoid politics to some length. With this below I thought that it all needs to be said straightforwardly, and politics unfortunately is interwoven deeply into the matter at hand, quite unnecessarily I believe. Some may see some problems of thought within my writing. That is what I’m a writer here for, to transmit thought and ideas. And I certainly can’t speak directly for those now on the land trying to express their point of view. That would be dis...

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Jan 21, 2021

This letter comes from the need for us to speak the truth about the issues surrounding public health in Carter County and the impact this has on our community. Historically, Dahl Memorial Healthcare Association has been synonymous with public health. The public health nurse has been under the roof of Dahl Memorial for decades and often the job has been taken on by a Dahl Memorial employed nurse contracting with the county to carry out public health duties. But let us be clear; Carter County Public Health is, and has always...

  • Mayor's notes

    Updated Jan 21, 2021

Dear Town of Ekalaka & Residents of Carter County, I was sitting here pondering what to say as we begin 2021. The first word that came to my mind about our community is resilient. I have lived in Ekalaka for over 50 years, and it always touches me how this community cares for those who are hurting, alone and struggling. I am so thankful that we have so many in this area who step up to do the hard things. Those at the hospital and nursing home have had to work tirelessly considering the pandemic. They have had to put their...

  • A good livestock guardian dog

    Michael Millward, Fallon-Carter County Extension Agent|Updated Jan 14, 2021

I grew up on a sheep operation with around 1200 head of ewes. After leaving the area and going to school I started to learn more about the problems that livestock operations have with predation of their livestock. I found that my fellow students in the Animal Science and Wildlife Biology programs, who had a similar experience to me and had seen an established pack of livestock guardian dogs at work, saw far fewer problems with predation of their livestock than those that had seen ineffective guardian dogs or that had not...
