When Hank Leffingwell woke up Saturday morning, he didn't think he would be up against a swarm. "They hit us like a bunch of piranhas," he said. The Community Wide Garage Sale was a quick success for the Leffingwells, who say they were able to sell their big ticket items right away. Most sellers were pleased with the turnout and a couple of the more rural sellers were surprised at the amount of people they'd had. A couple sellers were disappointed in the foot traffic,...
Anyone who didn't cast a ballot missed their chance to make a difference. Mike Watkins became the unofficial District 3 Republican nominee for Carter County Commissioner this November after defeating Bill Walker by one vote in Tuesday's primary election. The unofficial vote count was Watkins 238, Walker 237. Fifty-five percent of Carter County's registered voters cast ballots. Watkins told the Eagle the victory is still soaking in, but that he is waiting for the official...
Kindergarten graduates let the show begin at the Spring Awards Assembly with a rambunctious circus routine that included acrobatics, jumping rope and trick ring toss. After the entertainment, the students donned glittering top hats that slid almost to their eyes and received their diplomas. Students shared their favorite circus acts (acrobats, trapeze artists) and an alluring destination (China, Las Vegas). The Class of 2030 finished off their celebration with a line dance...
As a lifetime resident of Carter County, I have a lot invested in the welfare of our county. I graduated from Carter County High School in 1969. I married my wife, Janet Dodd, whom is also a lifetime resident of Carter County, in 1972. We ranched in the Finger Buttes area until 1984, when the 22 percent interest forced us to move on. While ranching in the early 80s, I started working part-time under Sheriff Vernon Preuss as a reserve officer. After moving to Alzada, I worked construction in the Alzada area while continuing...
My family and I have operated a full-time outfitting business in southern Carter County since 1993 and have resided in Alzada since 1999. Our two youngest children went to school in Alzada prior to graduating from the Hulett school system, and I am proud to say that both will make their home in the area this year. In 2006, having had 11 years of law enforcement experience in Oklahoma, I accepted a reserve position as a deputy sheriff to assist with answering emergency calls. That position became full-time in 2010 and has...
Fishing was a big part of our life growing up in Ekalaka and Carter County. I have told some of my fishing stories before, but I don't think that I have ever written a story about fishing, so, here goes. Grandma and Grandpa Coons kept a good supply of fishing stuff on the porch of their wonderful home. When us kids visited, we helped ourselves to willow poles and various other fishing supplies. We usually went fishing in Box Elder Creek, though, sometimes, we went in the reservoir by their house, which we referred to as the...
Thirty-seven units were donated by 24 individuals at the local blood drive last week. Blood drive organizer Darlene Carter-Rose said 37 units is the largest seen in quite some time. Carter-Rose handed out seven shirts last week and has several more ready for the next Ekalaka Community Blood Drive on July 24 at the Carter County Events Center....

Water is the most important nutrient for livestock. A quality and safe water supply is essential to the production of healthy livestock. If water is not suitable for consumption, it can adversely affect the growth, reproduction, and productivity of livestock. What makes water unsatisfactory for livestock in eastern Montana? It is often due to excessive salinity-too high concentration of dissolved salts, more specifically sulfates. Salinity, or total dissolved solids (TDS), is...

To Whom It May Concern: I, along with many of you, learned last week of the horrible events in Casper, WY when officer Jacob Carlson was shot five times in the line of duty. United Blood Services is a nonprofit community blood center, providing blood and blood products for local area hospitals and patients like officer Carlson. They exist to make a difference in people’s lives, by producing a safe and ample blood supply, a...
In my last article about Frank and Clara Nies, readers learned of Clara’s early life, her education, and moving to Montana. The article also gave information about her teaching experiences in Calumet, Jordan, and the Mackenzie school, which at the time was near the Fulton Ranch. In the fall of 1917 Clara came to teach the Spring Valley school and boarded at the Charles Nies home where she met Frank, her future husband. At the end of the school year she returned to Superior, Wisconsin and while there, Frank’s mother who was...

For a small fee of $10, anyone in the community may sign up to have their yard sale location printed on a map. Four hundred ninety-four ballots were counted following the regular school election on May 8 in Carter County. That’s roughly 57% of the registered voters in the county. Of those 494, 305 were in favor of the general fund increase, while 189 were against it. The levy authorizes the school board to impose an increase in local taxes to support the high school’s general fund. This increase of $8480.90, approximately .16 mills, will increase the taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 by about twenty-one cents, and wil...

On Tuesday, the senior class of Carter County High and their parents attended a banquet at the school. The banquet is organized and hosted each year by Sagebrush Service Club. Susan Tooke of the club explained that "the club took over from the Lions Club years ago," and that "they put it on to honor the senior class and bid them farewell as they leave the ranchero." On that notion, the club selected "Saddle Up For Success," as this year's senior banquet theme and chose Toby...
