Around 15 people attended a birthday party for Neal Heggen on November 10 at the Senior Citizens Center in Ekalaka. Heggen turned sixty-nine this year and enjoyed all of the cards and greetings. A Veterans Day program was held at Carter County High School recognizing local veterans on Monday. A light social hour kicked off the day's activities at around 2 p.m. Carter County FCCLA provided snacks for veterans and their families. The CCHS Lady Bulldogs took all three of their divisional tournament games to five sets in Sidney last weekend. Against North Country on Thursday, the Dogs won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17. North Country battled back and took the final three sets 16-25, 14-25 and 12-15. Whitney Kittelmann had 19 of the team's 28 assists and 20 of 73 digs. As we were growing up in Ekalaka, Independence Day was a lot of fun and very important to us. We always went out to the Grandparents farm to celebrate. Our cousins, Hans, Gale, Ronald and Doris would always come out with their parents, Joe and Sylvia Christiansen, who lived in Miles City. Sylvia was my mother’s sister. Katy Negaard recently entered the Inaugural All In Breakaway Roping scheduled for December 9 - 11 in Las Vegas. The roping is, in many ways, the first of its kind and the CCHS graduate is excited to compete for $100,000 in guaranteed payout money. She is one of only two Montana residents that have entered. There’ll be no more horsin’ around wearing our homemade bridles with bits and reins. No winter “horseshoes” with blocks of wood and straps to secure to our feet. Gene Gladys Thompson, 94, passed away Monday, October 28, 2019 at St. Benedict's Health Center in Dickinson, North Dakota. She was born August 31, 1925, on the Wesley Thompson ranch on Fallon Creek, about twenty miles northwest of Ekalaka, Montana, the first of three daughters born to Andrew Jacob and Mona Gladys (Boggs) Thompson. Last Tuesday’s blood drive in Ekalaka yielded twenty-six units of blood. Twenty-three people attended the drive and 21 were able to donate. Of those, 8 had appointments and 15 were walk-ins. Five people donated double units as the quota for the drive was met. David Malenovsky won the drive’s door prize. As of Wednesday morning, Ekalaka had officially received 24.49 inches of precipitation, according to National Weather Service data. That number is 8.66 inches above normal. In 1971 Ekalaka received 26.95 inches for the entire year, the most on record and about 2.5 inches more than the area has received so far this year. Only twice has Ekalaka ever received over 25 inches of precipitation for the year. The other year was 2011 when 25.90 inches were recorded. That year holds a record for May precipitation with 11.99 inches....
