  • Montana's greatest wonder: the Missouri River

Rick and Susie Graetz, University of Montana Department of Geography|Updated Oct 19, 2018

When the Missouri River puts Cascade behind, it looks out toward the sunset and the distant Rocky Mountain Front, the range of mountains that gave Montana its label "Land of the Shining Mountains." On July 18, Lewis wrote, "We passed the entrance a beautifull river 80 yards wide which falls in a Lard (left side). Which in honour of Mr. Roberts Smith secretary of the navy we called Smiths River. This stream meanders through a most lovely valey to the S.E. for about 25 miles...

  • Election 2018 – Initiative 185

Alina Sturgess, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Updated Oct 19, 2018

Montana smokers could be on the hook for an additional $2 per pack if ballot initiative Initiative 185 passes. The tobacco industry is shelling out big bucks in hopes it won't happen. It's a big reason your mailbox is stuffed this election season with flyers arguing its pros and cons. The initiative's backers see its passage as a "win-win." Higher taxes for tobacco products could discourage their use and perhaps reduce medical problems they cause. The extra money raised would...

  • Hat Tips

    Dean Meyer|Updated Oct 19, 2018

Hello, They had a bucking horse contest in Watford a couple of days ago. I wasn’t there. I wish I had been. They bucked nearly a hundred young horses out. Putting a dummy on them. No, a real dummy. It’s a deal rigged up to come off a young horse after a few seconds. Gives you a chance to see how these colts are going to perform as they get older. It’s a contest between stock contractors and bucking horse breeders. I’ve always had a soft spot for bucking horses. Unless they are saddle horses that buck. Over the years I’ve go...

  • Memories

    Loyd Townsend|Updated Oct 19, 2018

Sorry it has been a long time since I have written a “memories” article, but it has been a busy fall with lots of activities. A short “rabbit trail” before I get back to writing about those old time special neighbors. The Days of ‘85 have come and gone, but in my last article I mentioned our graduating class of 1948 was hoping to get together during that time. I also remember that during the days several other CCHS year classes did. Those years were 1953, 1955, 1958, 1968, 1988 and 2008, and I so enjoyed seeing and having a...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jesse and Connie Barnhart|Updated Oct 19, 2018

A vote for the continued support for 6-Mill Levy (LR-128, SB-85) would again help keep our most precious natural resources, our children, from looking for lower educational costs out of state. Some would like you to believe that 6-Mill is a new tax and unnecessary. It is neither. It is a 70 year Montana tradition approved by voters every 10 years without increase. There is strong bipartisan support including both current US Senators and organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Farm Bureau. Consider these facts....

    Updated Oct 19, 2018

The 29th Annual Alzada Cowboy Poetry, Music and Art Show saw a smaller crowd of about 125 people attend, but the community spirit inside the old hall was as lively as ever. “Why we do this…,” this year’s theme, was very evident throughout the day, which included a full program of poetry and music in the afternoon.
