  • Conversations with God

    Updated Oct 15, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, Fall is certainly in the air - just enough to make our blood strum; so, we know that it is time to tidy up for the coming winter. Town or country, cabin or mansion, postage-stamp garden or farm year. Reading from Eccl 3: 1-11a, we discover that: 1. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2. a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3. a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to b...

  • Letter to the editor

Paragraph #1 After reading the second lengthy letter to the Eagle by Friar Tobin, I thought I should submit a brief reply. While i appreciate his thorough writing about Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, I would like to share a different perspective of his general emphasis and some of his key interpretations. Paragraph #2 Mary first said “He has regarded the low estate of His handmaid.” Luke 1:45 The (Roman) Catholic Church did not exist for the first 300 years after the birth of Jesus. Catholic is a word mea...

Editor, As I was walking out of the senate chambers one day in my first session the Governor was walking by. As he shook my hand his comment to me was “Steve—that is a good name.” That might be one of the few times I agreed with him in the last four years. He told me he would sign all the good bills. That comment had me shaking my head after both sessions ended and I am really shaking my head as he campaigns for the US Senate. For instance, in both sessions we had several pro-gun bills that we passed out of the legis...

  • Letter to the editor

We don’t have to look very hard to know how the Cooney administration would work. For the past 16 years, Democrats have controlled the Governor’s office, and what do we have to show for it? As a small business owner, and a member of the Montana Legislature, I can tell you it’s been veto after veto, and an increase in job killing regulations. Montanans deserve better. Greg Gianforte will bring a fresh perspective to the Governor’s office, unlike Cooney who has been a Helena Bureaucrat for over 40 years. Cooney would continu...

  • The importance of voting

    Updated Oct 15, 2020

The photo to the left was taken by Joe Peters at the old Hockett Basin school site on Powder River. The teamster is Gene Brown, a local rancher who was headed to the precinct to vote when he lost one of the horses on his team. Brown must have thought that casting his vote was important enough to go to the bother of hitching up his milk cow to get him there. One can only wonder what the horse was thinking. According to Ingrid Brown of Powderville, the picture was taken around...

  • Dogs start slow, pull away in Plentywood

    Updated Oct 14, 2020

It took a while for the Bulldogs (4-2) to get going last Friday night in Plentywood (2-4), but when they did they were once again tough to stop, eventually pulling away for a 58-20 victory. Senior Jared Pardee, currently out with a broken arm, mentioned from the sideline during the game that it was the first time all season the Dogs hadn’t scored on their first possession. Plentywood continually blitzed inside gaps, creating havoc in the Bulldog backfield and confusing offensive linemen. It took most of the first half for t...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Oct 14, 2020

The general season for elk and deer is starting. This means that many hunters are contemplating robbing a bank or at least a convenience store to make ends meet AND stay within the hunting budget their wife has given them. You see, phonier than any hunting or fishing story you have ever heard is the myth that hunting saves money. At our house, the hunters definitely boost the local economy and the economy of several brick and mortar sporting goods stores and a couple online sites. I figure that every meal of wild game we...
