Several Carter County High School classes held reunions over the Days of '85 weekend in Ekalaka. Below are photographs from three of those reunions, including the class of 1977 that held a reunion to celebrate members of the class turning 60 years old this year. A few members of the CCHS Class of 1955 had a small get-together on Monday morning in Ekalaka. Dave Culver, the class valedictorian, was the guest of honor. Culver was in town over the weekend for the Days of...
"Winners" of Dahl Memorial Healthcare's ice bucket challenge, a contest started to raise funds for a walking path around the soon-to-be new facility, were Alex Loudermilk (left) and Ryan Tooke (below). The two employees had the most money donated into jars so they had a bucket of ice water dumped on them after the conclusion of the parade on Main Street, Sunday. Judging from the photos, the winners of the contest may have actually been the losers....
For Montana State University undergraduate Isabelle Brenes, digging a triceratops out of a hillside in the badlands near Ekalaka in July marked only the beginning of a long, familiar process of readying fossils for study and display. When she isn't volunteering on field digs with the Museum of the Rockies at MSU, Brenes, a senior majoring in paleontology in the Department of Earth Sciences in the College of Letters and Science, works at the museum as a fossil preparer,...
This year's Days of '85 Bump-N-Run started with seventeen super stock cars, including two pickups, and 9 modified cars. Weather cooperated, proving a great day of racing in Ekalaka. There were three super stock heats and one modified heat, all providing a lot of excitement and danger on the track as there was one rollover and a few fires. All in all, there was good racing by those competing. Organizers of the event thank their sponsors, racers, help and the crowd in...
The Carter County Fair Board and Marshall Ranch, sponsors of the 2019 Days of '85 Pet Parade, were pleased with the turnout even though there was one exhibitor less than last year. The entries were colorful and creative and the announcer, Susan Tooke, outdid herself this year with her costume and entertainment! Spectators in the bleacher area crowded in and craned their necks to view the handiwork with much clapping. Really, everyone in attendance was a winner. Category...

Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department, along with the aid of some community volunteers, cleaned Main Street last Thursday prior to the county fair. Each volunteer spent anywhere between three and fourteen hours sweeping and shoveling gravel, sand and dirt off the street. Weeds were also removed from cracks in the pavement and concrete. After the street was swept, the fire department washed the street using fire trucks and equipment. All involved showed pride and spirit in their...
One year ago, a group of local women who dubbed themselves the "Girl Power" group was selling treats, quilts and raffle tickets in Ekalaka to help Diana Harpster-Roby cover costs of donating one of her kidneys. "I cannot express enough gratitude to these girls and the Carter County community for all the support," Harpster-Roby wrote in a letter to the Eagle. The quilt winners were Tammy Meade of Ekalaka and Sandra Nies Homolka, originally from Ekalaka. After all the tickets...
Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, it was surprising to discover that some of us have incorrect blinking habits. There are even exercises designed to develop correct blinking so that the fluid movement of the eyelids prevents dry eyes. That’s when ‘time’ or seconds become real. One learns correct blinking as in: relax, close eyes, count three seconds, open eyes, count two seconds, repeat. Another exercise is: shut eyes, flutter the lids but don’t OPEN your eyes, flutter and count slowly to 100. The Devotiona...
Crowds who attended events during the 2019 Days of '85 Fair and Rodeo over the weekend experienced cooler temperatures than last year. The average high temp from Thursday to Sunday was 85 degrees Fahrenheit, though humidity made it feel warmer. Some of the action from this year's events can be seen here. More photos and event results can be found throughout this issue....
Grant money awarded in April will benefit science students at CCHS this fall. The $5,000 grant from ONEOK, Inc. was used to purchase seven microscopes. Former Ekalaka Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Schrock first told science teacher Chioko Hammel about the grant in February. Hammel knew that the science program was in need of new microscopes and sent back a description of what the microscopes would be used for and how they would benefit her students. In her description,...
Judges had a difficult time picking winners upon conclusion of the 2019 Days of '85 parade due to a large number of entries. The parade was one of the finest in the last several years. Fulton and Betty Jo Castleberry were this year's parade marshals. The competition for best class reunion float this year was tight. The CCHS Class of 1969 won the category with their float "We're Old School." Aboard the float was a miniature replica of the old CCHS high school. The class of...

As surplus licenses go on sale on Monday, Aug. 12, hunters should remember that, according to the 2019 regulations, they are allowed only one Elk B License, despite legislation passed during the recent Montana Legislature. In the 2019 legislative session, House Bill 497 was passed providing hunters the opportunity to harvest up to three elk. However, this legislation doesn’t change the regulations for this year, which state: “Each hunter may possess only one Elk B License per year in addition to a General Elk License.” “For...
Hello, You can feel Fall is in the air. Oh, I know we’ve had some hot days. And the summer thundershowers have been rolling through the Dakotas at a pretty steady pace. But the nights have been cool and we had one morning in the forties this past week. It will get hot again, but you can see fall is getting close. Now, with fall getting close, you have kids getting ready for school. I think football was invented to make young boys more anxious to go back to school. Especially if you live in Harding County, South Dakota. The R...
