The Hammond school is getting a much-needed larger entryway thanks to the help of several volunteers. As the volunteers tore off the old entry, they found initials of former students carved into the walls, along with some hearts and words that aren't suitable for grade school. Chad and Troy Harrington even found their father's initials. The building used to sit about a mile to the northwest, but was moved when the highway changed course some 60 years ago. It will be brimming...

She was the only child of Martha Loehding Strain and Ray Strain. She had 3 older half-brothers and a half-sister. She graduated from Carter County High School and moved to Helena after passing the Merit system test and getting a job at Ft. Harrison. She met her future husband, Fritz...
Immersed in a cathedral-like forest of tall trees in the cool quiet of morning, my thoughts are interrupted upon hearing an unfamiliar sound behind me – horse hooves. I am hiking the trail to Quartz Lake, where I'll interview Glacier National Park's fisheries crew. I had fallen behind the lightning-paced crew, and now I'm falling behind the mules packing in their supplies, even though the animals are loaded down with inflatable kayaks, nets, fuel and other supplies. F...
Dear Friends, On July 21, 2017 Judge Morris granted R-CALF a preliminary injunction enjoining USDA from continuing to allow Montana Beef Council (MBC) to receive their half of the $1.00 checkoff per head of cattle sold, which is paid by all producers when selling livestock. Beginning June 21, MBC was directed by USDA to send all checkoff dollars directly to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board (CBB). As a producer, the only way I can keep my 50 cents in the State of Montana is to complete and sign the Montana P...
The Dino Shindig continues to grow each year. It has become one of the largest events of the year in Ekalaka, bringing dino enthusiasts and tourists from all over the U.S. This year marked the 5th anniversary of the event held each July in Ekalaka. Each year, more has been added to the slate of events, and each year, more and more people are coming to Ekalaka. In 2014, about 250 people visited the museum over the three days surrounding the shindig. This year, 434 people...
Newly appointed county officials were dealt quite a hand 100 years ago when Carter County was organized as a county by the February 22, 1917 Legislative action. O’Fallon Flashbacks history indicates that prior to Carter County breaking from Fallon County, both sides realized the distance from Baker to the Wyoming line was too far for the proper functions expected of a county administration. The details of the county division are not recorded in official county records. However, the 1911 Legislature passed measures whereby a...

Last week I couldn’t remember if I’d sent the Eagle a Bright Idea! If I had, my computer didn’t show it; if I didn’t I was busy trying to write a caption for the VFW Auxiliary raffle quilt. I didn’t do a very good job, trying to beat a deadline. I should do better in the Aux. ad. Memory is the first sign of dementia; could that be beginning? Medicines I take could lead to that, experts tell me. Replacement medicines are recommended. I’ll see what our PAs, or my pharmacist says. Todd would know. MS itself could lead to dem...
Hello, It’s been a long time since we had a rain. A real rain. One that sat in and rained for three or four days. Just a drizzle. Where you sat at the coffee table and looked out the window at the grass growing. Or you swept and cleaned the shop and the tack room because it was too wet to even get out to the road. Or you had the kids go to the shop and straighten nails. A rain where you could take a spade and go down to the horse pens and dig little ditches that drained out the corner of the pen and found its way to the c...

Back in February, the Ekalaka Eagle reported that Belle Wendelburg was recognized by Senator Steve Daines as Montanan of the Week for her continued work in serving her community. Wendelburg retired from Dahl Memorial in July of 2016 after working there for more than 20 years. In his statement of recognition in the official Congressional Record, Daines wrote, “Throughout the past 20 years, Belle has remained faithful in her love for her home and the eastern Montana prairie. I want to express my deep gratitude to Mrs. Belle W...
