  • Hat Tips

    Dean Meyer|Updated May 31, 2018

Hello, It’s been a long time since I read or listened to any of Aesop’s fables. I imagine there are many of you in the same boat I am. We sit and stare at the TV, clicker in hand, and complain because there is nothing good on. Oh, Seinfeld reruns are OK, and once in awhile I watch a Twins game. In spite of this, my reading has diminished the past few years. And that is a bad thing. What started this train of thought was watching Shirley this past week. She planted her garden. Now, I’m not much of a gardener. I was 22-ye...

    Ryan OConnell|Updated May 31, 2018

Kindergarten graduates let the show begin at the Spring Awards Assembly with a rambunctious circus routine that included acrobatics, jumping rope and trick ring toss. After the entertainment, the students donned glittering top hats that slid almost to their eyes and received their diplomas. Students shared their favorite circus acts (acrobats, trapeze artists) and an alluring destination (China, Las Vegas). The Class of 2030 finished off their celebration with a line dance...

  • Alzada residents vie for county commissioner

    Bill Walker|Updated May 31, 2018

As a lifetime resident of Carter County, I have a lot invested in the welfare of our county. I graduated from Carter County High School in 1969. I married my wife, Janet Dodd, whom is also a lifetime resident of Carter County, in 1972. We ranched in the Finger Buttes area until 1984, when the 22 percent interest forced us to move on. While ranching in the early 80s, I started working part-time under Sheriff Vernon Preuss as a reserve officer. After moving to Alzada, I worked construction in the Alzada area while continuing...

  • Alzada residents vie for county commissioner

    Mike Watkins|Updated May 31, 2018

My family and I have operated a full-time outfitting business in southern Carter County since 1993 and have resided in Alzada since 1999. Our two youngest children went to school in Alzada prior to graduating from the Hulett school system, and I am proud to say that both will make their home in the area this year. In 2006, having had 11 years of law enforcement experience in Oklahoma, I accepted a reserve position as a deputy sheriff to assist with answering emergency calls. That position became full-time in 2010 and has...

  • Fishing

    Bill Lavell|Updated May 31, 2018

Fishing was a big part of our life growing up in Ekalaka and Carter County. I have told some of my fishing stories before, but I don't think that I have ever written a story about fishing, so, here goes. Grandma and Grandpa Coons kept a good supply of fishing stuff on the porch of their wonderful home. When us kids visited, we helped ourselves to willow poles and various other fishing supplies. We usually went fishing in Box Elder Creek, though, sometimes, we went in the reservoir by their house, which we referred to as the...

  • God and family

    Ryan OConnell|Updated May 31, 2018

Last Friday, Pastor Jon Champlin's family and members of his congregation threw him a surprise birthday party. His wife, Kati Champlin, says he caught on after becoming suspicious of why she was cooking six-pounds of meat. The Champlin family is celebrating another milestone this week: their one-year Ekalaka anniversary. Champlin is pastor of Ekalaka Bible Church. He and his wife have two children, both with straw-colored hair, Liam, who is very polite, and Evangeline, who is...

  • On top of the hill and hide-away

    Ryan OConnell|Updated May 31, 2018

Jo Kittelmann threw a kitchen boa around her neck, a three-foot-long cloth with red dish towels at the head and tail, and explained its usefulness. Instead of a wet tea towel over the shoulder, the boa keeps shirts from getting soaked while allowing either end to be wet and the other dry. Or both dry. Or both wet. It's one piece of material with four possibilities. Unique items like the boa are what Hideaway Gifts is all about. Located in the Rockwellesque school house by the...
