The Ekalaka Public Library's Summer Reading Program starts Thursday, June 7. Children aged seven and older will meet from 1-2 p.m. and children six and under will meet from 2:30-3 p.m. All children are welcome, at any time or day, during library hours. Students from Carter County participated in the Southeast Regional Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math Contest in March. Ekalaka’s junior high team placed first and was comprised of Kenzie Tooke, Turner Tooke, Sean Wolenetz, Tyra O’Connor, and Darin Schallenberger. On April 30 and 31, the Carter County FFA Chapter made the trek to Big Timber, Montana to compete in the annual CDE Days competition. Kenzie Tooke, Heather LaBree, Hannah LaBree and Darin Schallenberger competed in the Food Science, Vet Science and Job Interview CDE’s. In Food Science, Heather placed 20th, Hannah placed 68th, Darin placed 70th and Kenzie rounded off the team with 75th place. Private family services for Braelie Mae Nies, infant daughter of Matt and Ami (Markuson) Nies, will be held at a later date. Memorial Day services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 28, at Beaver Lodge Cemetery. Veterans performing the services should arrive at 10:30 a.m. During the service, members of VFW Auxiliary will honor fallen soldiers by placing a white cross and a red, poppy covered wreath in the center of the cemetery. A jury found Jedediah Keith Larson guilty of aggravated assault on May 17, according to court documents. Larson was also found guilty of a misdemeanor charge of partner or family member assault.
