After Mainstreet Market burned down, people were suddenly forced to drive the 35 miles to Baker, or farther if they lived out of town, to get most groceries. Every year Carter County Gumbo Gophers 4-H Club has a free will donation chili supper and silent auction to raise money for the Alzada Volunteer Fire Department.
