  • Spring blizzard dumps most April snow since 2006

    According to the National Weather Service, Ekalaka received 21.5 inches of snow during last week's blizzard. By 5 p.m. on Tuesday, 11.5 inches had accumulated, another 7.5 had fallen by 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday saw 2.5 inches. The snow resulted in 1.41 inches of precipitation.     After deer and elk permits were drawn April 14th, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks uncovered an error in the drawing process affecting less than three percent of applications across the state in ten hunting districts. This year the Fish and Wildlife Commission changed several elk hunting districts to "first and only choice" for applications, meaning if hunters want to hunt any of these districts, they forfeit the option to list a second or third choice on their application.     Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in a snow goose from Canyon Ferry and a Canada goose from near Belgrade last week. HPAI was detected earlier this month in domestic poultry in Judith Basin and Cascade counties. Several more birds from around the state are currently undergoing testing for the virus.
