A young bull moose that had been stuck on ice for at least three days on the Missouri River in Richland County had to be dispatched Tuesday by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. “It’s been three days,” said FWP Region 7 Warden Ryan Kasson. “We did what we could do, and let Mother Nature try to take its course, but unfortunately the moose didn’t get up.” The moose was spotted earlier this week by citizens flying over the area in a helicopter. The animal was lying on river ice near the Snowden Bridge Fishing Access Site, about...

The most challenging cooking jobs I have ever had were my many years of wilderness camp cooking in the Scapegoat Wilderness for Brett and Julie Todd. Every time I rode out of camp, I would marvel that I had kept all those people fed under extreme conditions for a week with no opportunity to restock supplies. You see, at home I am one of those people who goes to the grocery store every day. One morning while I was cooking biscuits and gravy in the Meadow Creek Camp, one of the guides recounted a tale about my camp cooking coun...
Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, sometimes we need a reminder about certain things. How fun to discover that this coming Tuesday, the 21st, is called Hugging Day! Give your best friends a hug to let them know they are awesome, and together you c...

In June 2020, Daylee Hanson will embark on a trip of a lifetime. It may sound cliché, but it truly is an opportunity that local youth should take advantage of. Students were asked to write an essay on how electricity can be used to save and improve lives, especially in developing nations. Hanson's concern for those with no source of electricity is the efficiency of work which also would affect the economy. Lack of heating, cooling and medical care are also items that Hanson...
After an early-season storm dropped snow in Montana’s high country at the end of September, it seemed like the new 2020 water year was off to a strong start. The wet and cold weather patterns that dominated October boosted snowpack and precipitation totals in many basins east of the Divide by early November, with some mountain SNOTEL (SNOwpack TELemetry) sites reporting the first or second most snow water equivalent contained within the snowpack for that date. “While we got off to a great start early in the year, the maj...
